The safety of the children and teachers at Las Palmas Elementary School in San Clemente, CA is at risk largely due to the current state of the fencing around the entire school property. The current fencing has wide open holes for people to climb through, is bending over, and is easy to jump over, as many areas are only waist high. These issues pose a significant danger to the safety of our children. This is especially true given that the school is located across the street from Max Berg Park, which is an area known for increased police activity due to reports of gang activity and gun violence.  Just last week, the children in the after-school program were forced to shelter in place as there was a potential active shooter in the neighborhood. On a Monday afternoon last July, there was a shooting at Max Berg Park that left one person injured.   

If the current situation remains unchanged, the safety and wellbeing of our children and teachers will continue to be at risk. It will mean that our children are exposed to danger every day while attending school, causing anxiety and fear among students and parents alike. Moreover, if the district fails to take appropriate action, it may potentially lead to a decline in student enrollment as parents opt for safer alternatives. This would result in a loss of funding for the school, leading to further setbacks in academic performance and the overall quality of education.

The safety of our children must be the top priority and we cannot afford to wait any longer. It is imperative that the district takes immediate action to replace the inadequate fencing around the entire school property to ensure the safety of our children and teachers. We urge the district to prioritize this matter and take swift action before any more incidents occur. 

La seguridad de los niños y maestros de la Escuela Primaria Las Palmas en San Clemente, CA está en riesgo en gran parte debido al estado actual de las cercas alrededor de toda la propiedad escolar. La cerca actual tiene agujeros abiertos facilitando a la gente a que pueda trepar, también está vencida en algunas áreas y en muchas otras áreas solo tiene la altura de la cintura. Estos problemas representan un peligro significativo para la seguridad de nuestros niños. Esto es especialmente cierto dado que la escuela está ubicada al otro lado de la calle del parque Max Berg, que es un área conocida por el aumento de la actividad policial debido a los informes de actividad de pandillas y violencia armada. La semana pasada, los niños del programa extracurricular se vieron obligados a refugiarse en el lugar porque había un posible tirador activo (portador de armas) en la colonia. Un lunes por la tarde de julio pasado, hubo un tiroteo en Max Berg Park que dejó a una persona herida.

Si la situación actual no cambia, la seguridad y el bienestar de nuestros niños y maestros seguirá estando en riesgo. Significará que nuestros niños están expuestos al peligro todos los días mientras asisten a la escuela, causando ansiedad y miedo entre los estudiantes y los padres por igual. Además, si el distrito no toma las medidas apropiadas, puede conducir potencialmente a una disminución en la inscripción de estudiantes, ya que los padres optan por alternativas más seguras. Esto daría como resultado una pérdida de fondos para la escuela, lo que provocaría más retrocesos en el rendimiento académico y la calidad general de la educación.

La seguridad de nuestros niños debe ser la máxima prioridad y no podemos darnos el lujo de esperar más. Es imperativo que el distrito tome medidas inmediatas para reemplazar el cercado inadecuado alrededor de toda la propiedad escolar para garantizar la seguridad de nuestros niños y maestros. Instamos al distrito a priorizar este asunto y tomar medidas rápidas antes de que ocurran más incidentes.
