ITS A REQUEST FROM ALL ANIMAL LOVERS TO MAYOR KARACHI.

Dear Mayor Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui,

 

We, the undersigned concerned citizens and animal lovers, are writing to you with great distress and sadness regarding the deplorable conditions and inadequate treatment of animals at Karachi Zoo. Our recent visit to the zoo has revealed a distressing sight - an injured monkey, depicted in the attached photograph, with a visibly infected wound. This image symbolizes the larger issue of neglect and mistreatment faced by many animals in the zoo.

 

Furthermore, we cannot ignore the tragic incident that occurred just two months ago when Noor Jehan, the beloved elephant, lost her life due to negligence on the part of the zoo management and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation. This unfortunate incident has highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of the zoo's operations and animal care.

 

We understand that the Karachi Zoo is facing numerous challenges, including limited resources and personnel. However, it is our firm belief that these challenges should not be used as an excuse to compromise the well-being and welfare of the animals under your care. Every living being deserves to be treated with respect and provided with appropriate care, irrespective of the constraints faced by the organization responsible for their well-being.

 

In light of the above, we kindly request you to take immediate action to address the following concerns:

 

Veterinary Care: Grant permission for independent veterinary professionals, chosen by reputable animal welfare organizations, to visit the zoo and provide much-needed medical attention to animals in dire need. This will ensure that animals receive proper treatment promptly, minimizing the risk of further suffering and preventable deaths.

 

Facility Improvement: Allocate necessary resources to improve the living conditions and enclosures within the zoo. These upgrades should include ensuring proper sanitation, adequate space for each species, and appropriate environmental enrichment to promote their mental and physical well-being.

 

Staff Training and Development: Invest in training programs for zoo personnel to enhance their knowledge and understanding of animal care and welfare. This will ensure that the staff is equipped with the necessary skills to provide optimal care for the animals under their supervision.

 

Transparency and Accountability: Establish a system for regular monitoring and reporting of animal welfare standards within the zoo. This will ensure transparency, facilitate public oversight, and hold the management accountable for any lapses in animal care.

 

We strongly believe that taking these measures will not only alleviate the suffering of the animals at Karachi Zoo but also restore public confidence in the institution. By demonstrating a commitment to animal welfare, Karachi can set an example for other cities in Pakistan and beyond.

 

We request you, Mayor Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui, to use your authority and influence to initiate these changes promptly. Let us work together to create a compassionate and ethical environment for the animals at Karachi Zoo.
