Subject: Urgent action needed to address food insecurity in Nunavut 

Dear Mark Holland, 

I am writing to you as a concerned citizen urgently requesting your attention and action to address the food security crisis in Nunavut. As elected representatives, we rely on your leadership and commitment to ensure the well-being of all Canadians, regardless of their geographical location. The purpose of this letter is to advocate for a shift in how the government is addressing food insecurity in Nunavut. Progressive income policies, support for Nunavut’s local food system, and additional funding for grassroots organizations must be a priority if the government intends to address this public health crisis. This crisis has been well documented for decades and discussed frequently but food insecurity continues to worsen within the region, clearly highlighting that the government’s current strategy is not effective. To effectively combat food insecurity in Nunavut, the government must shift its policy focus to support food sovereignty.

Food security is an essential human right, recognized globally, and enshrined in international agreements, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. It is disheartening to acknowledge that a significant portion of our population remains food insecure, particularly in Nunavut. 

Statistics reveal that an alarming 70% of Inuit households in Nunavut are currently struggling with food insecurity. Additionally, 50% of all households in Nunavut are food insecure. This shocking figure represents a distressing reality faced by many individuals and families, who struggle to meet their basic nutritional needs. This situation is unacceptable and demands a comprehensive and coordinated response from all levels of government. 

To effectively combat food insecurity in Nunavut, we urge you to consider the following actions: 

Implement progressive income policies: allocate additional financial resources to support income policies that ensure that all Nunavummiut can afford nutritious, culturally appropriate food for their families. Policies like senior benefits, income assistance, and child benefit payments should be in line with the high cost of living in Nunavut and indexed to inflation. Progressive policies, like a Universal Basic Income, should be explored.  

Collaborate with Inuit organizations: engage in meaningful and collaborative partnerships with Inuit communities and government in Nunavut. In shifting from food security to food sovereignty, Inuit organizations should be involved in all levels of the decision-making processes related to food sovereignty initiatives. Indigenous-led solutions are crucial to addressing food insecurity.

Enhance infrastructure: invest in the development and improvement of infrastructure that facilitates access to affordable and nutritious country food and store-bought food, such as marine infrastructure, processing and distribution facilities, transportation systems, and community markets. These enhancements will enhance food distribution networks and increase food sovereignty in remote communities. 

Support local food production: encourage and support local country food production in Nunavut, including the promotion of traditional hunting and fishing practices. Implement programs and policies that directly support the actions of hunters, like offering hunters a liveable wage for their work. These efforts will not only enhance food security but also contribute to economic development and cultural connection. 

Improve nutrition programs: strengthen existing nutrition programs in Nunavut, particularly those targeted towards vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly. These programs should focus on providing access to healthy and culturally appropriate food, as well as nutrition education and counselling. 

By taking immediate action and prioritizing food sovereignty, progressive income policies, and investments in infrastructure  we can foster healthier communities in the North. We implore you to recognize the urgency of this matter and take decisive steps towards eradicating food insecurity in Nunavut. We trust in your commitment to representing the interests and needs of all Canadians, and we are confident that you will act in the best interests of the constituents you serve.
