On August 27, 2025, two young men tragically drowned in Mahogany Lake, a community lake in southeast Calgary. Their lives were full of promise, and their loss has devastated families, friends, and our entire city. This heartbreaking event is not just a tragedy; it’s a call to action. This is not the first incident of drowning at the Mahogany Lake and other recreational water spaces.

Every summer, families and friends gather at Calgary’s lakes to swim, relax, and create memories. But recent tragedies have shown us that these cherished moments can turn devastating in an instant. Lives have been lost, lives that could have been saved with stronger safety measures. The risk is real and urgent. We cannot wait for another tragedy to spur action. Calgary needs to act now to protect everyone enjoying our recreational water spaces within our city.
