Urge YouTube to Enhance Ad Safety Instead of/Before Blocking Ads

Urge YouTube to Enhance Ad Safety Instead of/Before Blocking Ads
The Issue
I am an IT professional who has witnessed firsthand the damage caused by dangerous online advertising campaigns. It is often my responsibility to help victims recover from these incidents and ensure they do not happen again. This experience has led me to call for a change in how YouTube handles its advertisements.
YouTube, as one of the world's largest video-sharing platforms, plays a significant role in shaping our digital environment. However, it currently blocks ads rather than focusing on improving ad safety. There are documented instances of ads linking to malware, scams that deceive unsuspecting users, ads that could trigger relapses into addictions, and sexually explicit ads appearing on family-friendly content.
This lack of regulation poses serious risks to users' safety and well-being. According to a study by NortonLifeLock Inc., 1 in 4 people have been victims of identity theft due to malicious online activities such as these unsafe advertisements (NortonLifeLock Inc., 2020).
The central idea of this petition is not just about blocking harmful content but also about creating a safer digital space for all users. We believe that if YouTube implements stricter regulations on ad safety – preventing dangerous or inappropriate advertisements – signatories will disable their adblockers voluntarily.
We urge YouTube to focus more resources on ensuring ad safety so we can trust the platform with our data security and mental health. Please join us in calling upon YouTube for this necessary change - sign this petition today!
