Urge West Des Moines to stop concert noise from nearby venue
The Issue
Beginning in early September 2026, residents of the Country Club neighborhood in Clive have endured extremely loud music from outdoor concerts at the new Meridian event space in the Atlas building (formerly the Wells Fargo building), located at 7001 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Although the official address of the Atlas is on Westown, the building’s outdoor stage is on the University Ave. side of the building. As a result, the building acts like a concert shell, reflecting sound directly onto the Country Club neighborhood and surrounding areas.
During the most recent concert the evening of Friday, October 2, many residents reported that the noise—which began after 6:00 p.m. and continued until nearly 10:00 p.m.—rattled their homes and could be clearly heard and felt indoors, even with all doors and windows shut. One resident reported that her toddler woke up screaming as a result of the noise.
Even residents whose homes are closer to Hickman than University can clearly hear this music inside their homes. Several residents called the West Des Moines police nonemergency line to report the disturbances.
We ask the City of West Des Moines to stop allowing outdoor music performances at this venue because of its close proximity to a large, established residential neighborhood. The Meridian's own social media accounts show that they've moved outdoor performances inside their venue on many occasions due to weather, so an indoor-only rule would not prevent them from hosting live music.
We support local businesses and live entertainment, but location matters. Residents should be able to enjoy their homes and yards without recurring disruption from outdoor performances at a space that was originally designed as an office building. An indoor-only rule would allow the Meridian to continue offering live music while containing the sound within the venue.
