Urge Wandsworth to upgrade Cycle Path by the Thames to reduce collisions
The Issue
As a regular user of the Thames path from Wandsworth to Battersea, I've witnessed too many near misses and have heard about collisions between pedestrians and cyclists. This path is not only a vital connection for cyclists, offering one of the few safe routes in Wandsworth, but it's also a popular spot for walkers. However, the lack of a dedicated cycle path poses risks to everyone.
The Thames Path should be a space where both pedestrians and cyclists can coexist safely. Unfortunately, without a proper cycle lane, it has become increasingly dangerous for both groups, leading to calls by some to ban bicycles entirely from the path. This would be a huge loss for the cycling community and counterproductive to Wandsworth's efforts to promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.
Building a dedicated cycle path along the Thames will not only increase safety for everyone, but it will also promote healthier lifestyles and reduce traffic congestion in the area. According to a report by the Department for Transport, Infrastructure improvements like segregated cycle lanes can lead to a significant reduction in accidents and collisions in urban areas.
Moreover, this initiative aligns with the Mayor of London's strategy for promoting zero-emission transport and cyclist safety. It's imperative for Wandsworth Council to take responsibility and act now. Implementing a clearly marked, separate cycle path will ensure the Thames Path remains a cherished and accessible route for all.
Sign this petition to urge the Wandsworth Council to prioritize the safety of both pedestrians and cyclists and build a dedicated cycle path along the Thames Path. Together, we can create a safer, more harmonious environment for everyone using this beautiful route alongside the Thames.
