The Issue

Birds are dying due to a preventable issue.
It has recently become apparent that open-top columns in the outdoor structure of the USPS office at 201 N Murrow Blvd, Greensboro NC are death traps for birds.

A struggling bird was found confined by one of these columns on June 9, 2025, and their rescue was refused by USPS employees.

Bird bones and skulls were also visible inside and around this column, as well as three dead birds within the column.

Birds are entering and nesting inside the tops of these tall columns; in fact, baby birds were heard and an adult bird seen flying in and out of the top of the same column on the same day the trapped bird was found.

This perilous situation has been resulting in the tragic deaths of birds and is clearly an ongoing threat.

The harm caused by these open columns is significant and avoidable. Concrete measures should taken to prevent further harm and death of wildlife.

Implementing simple yet effective solutions such as covering the open columns- once they are confirmed to be free of wildlife- could avoid these fatalities.

Statistical evidence underscores this issue's urgency. According to recent studies, such as those reported by The Audubon Society, millions of birds die annually due to man-made structures. USPS can significantly contribute to reversing this trend by adopting measures to protect birds from man-made enclosure traps.

We urge USPS to take these vital steps towards safeguarding wildlife.

Join us in advocating for a change to protect birds from avoidable harm. Sign this petition to show your support and prompt USPS to quickly and effectively prevent wildlife from entering the columns without causing injury or distress to birds who may be currently trapped or nesting in the columns.
