Update on the Save the Kurds Act

I want to share an important update regarding the Save the Kurds Act. Initially suggested by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), this crucial legislation has now officially been introduced in the Senate. The act addresses the ongoing attacks by Syrian government forces on the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and aims to impose sanctions on those supporting the Syrian government.

The SDF has been a vital ally in the U.S. efforts to defeat ISIS, and their contributions have been essential for maintaining stability in northeastern Syria. However, the new Syrian President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has launched a campaign against the SDF, which has raised significant concerns not only for the stability of the region but also for the safety of U.S. troops stationed there.

The Save the Kurds Act includes several important provisions:
- Imposing sanctions on Syrian government officials and individuals who engage with the Syrian government.
- Recognizing the contributions of the SDF in the fight against ISIS.
- Redesignating Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
- Requiring congressional review for any removal of Syria's terrorism designation.
- Granting the president authority to suspend sanctions when the Syrian government ceases its attacks on the SDF, with a snapback measure to reimpose sanctions if attacks resume.
