The Issue

I am a senior at Valley High School, and for the past four years, 4-H has been an integral part of my life. Being part of this program has taught me invaluable skills and provided me with a community where I've formed lasting friendships. It was my haven after school, a space that not only kept me busy but enriched my life with new hobbies and interests. I firmly believe that every young person deserves this transformative experience.

4-H programs like the one I’ve been a part of at Valley are essential. They foster a sense of belonging, teach practical skills, and prepare young individuals for the real world. Not to mention the mental health benefits and the safe community environment they offer to students who might not have such opportunities elsewhere.

Recently, I've been deeply concerned about the future of the 4-H program at Valley due to funding uncertainties. If the program is discontinued or under-funded, it would deny future generations the chance to grow, learn, and thrive. With UNR's support, 4-H can continue to provide essential experiences to young people, setting them up for future success.

Research shows that youth programs like 4-H are crucial in student development. According to studies by the National 4-H Council, participants are four times more likely to contribute to their communities, and twice as likely to participate in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs. These are skills and contributions that benefit not only the individuals but the community as a whole.

I implore the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) to consider the profound impact 4-H has on students and the wider community, and to continue funding this vital program. Letting 4-H fade is to let down the future leaders, scientists, and citizens of Nevada.

Please join me in urging UNR to fund and support the 4-H program at Valley for the benefit of future generations. Sign this petition to send a clear message that we value our youth and their education in real-world skills.

Let’s ensure that every kid has the chance to experience the magic of 4-H, just as I did. Sign and share this petition to keep the spirit of 4-H alive at Valley.
