Urge University of North Georgia to keep Johnny B's open

Community Members Launch Petition to Preserve Johnny B’s in Downtown Dahlonega

Dahlonega, Georgia, Local residents, alumni, and community members have launched a petition calling for the preservation of Johnny B’s, a longstanding downtown gathering place recently purchased by the University of North Georgia.

For years, Johnny B’s has served as a meeting place for students and locals alike. Generations of alumni remember it as a cornerstone of their college experience. Residents describe it as part of the cultural fabric of downtown Dahlonega, contributing to the town’s character, small business ecosystem, and sense of community.

Organizers of the petition emphasize that the effort is not anti-university. The University of North Georgia remains a vital institution and economic anchor for the region. Rather, supporters are requesting open dialogue and thoughtful consideration before any decision is made that could result in the closure or demolition of the building.

“Johnny B’s represents shared memories across decades,” said a community supporter. “We respect the university’s growth and planning needs, but we believe there may be creative solutions that allow progress while preserving places that mean so much to so many.”

Petition organizers are asking university leadership and the Board of Regents to engage with local stakeholders, alumni, and business owners to explore options that would allow Johnny B’s to remain open while aligning with long term campus plans.

Supporters argue that preserving the establishment would maintain an important bridge between town and campus and protect a piece of Dahlonega’s identity.

Community members who wish to support the petition can add their names online and share their memories of Johnny B’s and its impact on their lives.
