Urge UNFI to secure grocery access at the Shoppers in Waldorf

Urge UNFI to secure grocery access at the Shoppers in Waldorf
The Issue
Living in Charles County, I have personally witnessed the struggle that many residents face in having consistent and convenient access to essential groceries. The closure of grocery stores, especially in regions like Waldorf, has left many families scrambling to find affordable and quality food options close to home. This issue is more than just a matter of convenience; it affects the well-being and daily lives of our community members.
Shoppers has long been a staple in many neighborhoods providing vital food supplies to countless families. The decision by UNFI, the parent company of Shoppers, to potentially reduce operations or close locations in Waldorf could severely limit food access at a time when it is needed most. For those without personal transportation, the distance to the next nearest grocery store could become an insurmountable hurdle, leading to increased food insecurity.
Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture illustrates that food deserts, regions where residents have limited access to a variety of healthy and affordable food, are linked to increased health problems and economic burdens. Charles County should not be pushed towards such a designation, which is why it’s crucial to maintain and expand grocery access.
We urge UNFI to make a firm commitment to not only keeping current Shoppers locations open in Waldorf but also to consider adding more grocery outlets in the region. Investments in local stores mean investing in the residents' health, local economy, and community stability.
Join us in advocating for basic necessities. Sign this petition to make your voice heard in urging UNFI to prioritize the community's needs. Help us ensure every resident of Waldorf has access to the groceries they deserve. Your support can make a tangible difference in preventing our area from becoming another food desert.
