I am writing this petition as the President of the Student Government Association at UMBC. It came to my attention that the administration does not plan to bring in a new mascot to replace our beloved pup, Chip, who retired this summer. This decision affects us all because Chip was not just a mascot; she embodied the spirit of our campus and touched the hearts of every student, faculty member, and visitor.

Chip has always been more than just a symbol for UMBC. From welcoming new students at orientation to spreading joy at sports events, Chip has been the embodiment of our pride and community spirit. We students loved the excitement she brought with her charismatic presence, and many of us fondly remember petting her during events for comfort during midterms and finals. Her personality brought people together and made every event she was at special.

Without a live mascot, we risk losing an invaluable piece of what makes UMBC such a special community. Our mascot is such an important part of our student experience here at UMBC, enhancing school spirit and offering a unique connection point for us and prospective students alike. Chip in past years has been a welcome and frequently requested face at student org and Campus Life events. Chip even had her own events, like Laps with Chip!

We urge the UMBC administration to reconsider their decision to not bring in a new live mascot. Let's preserve this cherished tradition and ensure that future generations of UMBC students have the chance to create their own memories with our mascot.

Please sign this petition to encourage UMBC to find a successor for Chip who can carry on her legacy. Our campus spirit depends on it.
