Urge UK retailers to adopt no-kill egg technology

Urge UK retailers to adopt no-kill egg technology
The Issue
The mass killing of male chicks by the egg industry is banned in France, Germany and Italy, thanks to technology which can tell the sex of eggs before they are hatched. However, UK retailers have so far blocked it being widely adopted citing lack of consumer demand. Crucially, they also don’t want promote kill-free eggs because it might make people more aware of the widespread killing of male chicks. This petition is to show retailers that there is demand in the UK for kill-free eggs, and the customers would be happy to pay more for higher animal welfare!
- 29 million day old male chicks are needlessly killed in the UK each year by crushing or gassing
- Technology exists to determine the sex of eggs on the 9th day of incubation (the eggs can then be repurposed for other uses, for example in dog food)
- The mass culling of chicks is outlawed in Germany, France and Italy, who have all successfully adopted the technology
