Urge Tofino's Mayor and Council to Hold a Referendum on the STR Legislation

The Issue

As residents of Tofino, BC, we will be deeply affected by the potential implications of the Principal Residence requirement of the Province's Principal Residence Requirement of Bill 35 – 2023 Short-Term Rental Accommodation Act. This bill will significantly impact our community and our lives.

After multiple public consultations, it is clear that many in our community share these concerns. Yet despite this widespread apprehension, there is a feeling among us that our voices are not being heard by those in power. Our Mayor and Council seem to be moving ahead with their plans without taking into account the worries expressed by their constituents.

This situation has led us to believe that the most appropriate way forward is for Council to engage voters directly through an Assent Vote or Referendum. This would ensure that decisions made about this important issue truly reflect the will of those who live here.

Tofino is more than just a place; it's home for all of us who live here. We deserve to have a say in decisions that could change our town forever. Therefore, we call upon Tofino's Mayor and Council to hold an Assent Vote/Referendum regarding whether to opt in or out of the Principal Residence Requirement of Bill 35 – 2023 Short-Term Rental Accommodation Act.

Please sign this petition if you believe in democratic decision-making and want your voice heard on this critical issue affecting Tofino.
