Urge TikTok to ban accounts linked to violence in Haiti
Urge TikTok to ban accounts linked to violence in Haiti
La causa
I am a member of the Haitian community and a TikTok user who is deeply concerned about the spread of harmful content on the platform. The presence of accounts associated with serious allegations of violence and criminal activity in Haiti has left many of us feeling vulnerable and unsafe. These aren't just allegations; they reflect the terrifying realities that our community members face daily, and TikTok is inadvertently providing a platform for these dangerous narratives and individuals.
The specific accounts that need urgent attention and investigation include Nice B, Inspecte Tèt Kale, Magistrat, and Lanmò San Jou. Reports of their active engagement in promoting or being associated with violence in our communities are troubling and unacceptable. For the safety and peace of mind of Haitian TikTok users and the global community, these accounts must be scrutinized and, if found guilty, banned from the platform.
TikTok boasts over a billion users and, with that reach, a responsibility to protect those users from content and actors who glorify or spread violence. According to TikTok’s own Community Guidelines, the platform prohibits content that promotes violent behavior or extremist groups, yet these accounts continue to operate. Do we need to remind TikTok of their own rules?
The platform recently reported a 60% increase in its active editing user base, mostly young people who are susceptible to the normalization of violence and crime when such accounts aren't held accountable. TikTok's role in safeguarding its community must be proactive and firm, especially when it threatens the stability and safety of communities like those in Haiti.
This petition is not just a request; it's a plea. Families in Haiti are growing increasingly alarmed at the safety of their children and loved ones as these accounts continue to enjoy an audience and a voice. By allowing these accounts to persist, TikTok is indirectly endorsing these harmful messages, depriving us of a safe environment to express ourselves, share positive stories, and enjoy social media without fear.
We urge TikTok to review these accounts immediately and act decisively. By signing this petition, you will help urge TikTok to uphold its guidelines and contribute to a safer online environment for all its users.
