Social media has become a powerful platform that can be used for good or ill. Recently, it has been documented that there are creators on Tiktok using their platform to mislead viewers about the welfare of animals in their care. These creators disguise their channels as rescue centers, deceitfully asking for gifts/money under the pretense of caring for sick and maltreated animals. In reality, these animals are forced to live in unsanitary, poor conditions and are not provided with adequate nutrition or care. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, about 6.1 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters every year - these are the animals truly in need of rescue and proper care. Tiktok as a platform must act with a sense of responsibility and can no longer turn a blind eye to such exploitative behaviors, which exacerbate the already alarming numbers of animals in real need. We ask Tiktok to implement stricter policies against animal cruelty and misleading content about animal care. We believe that such changes will significantly enhance the welfare of animals presented on the platform and prevent the misuse of viewer sympathy for personal gain.
