Petition – Urge Council to Abandon the £80 Brown Bin Collection Charge 

 

 

 

Chairman and Members of Thurrock Council,

I stand before you to present a petition that reflects the collective voice of our community, urging the Council to reconsider and ultimately abandon the £80 Brown Bin Garden Waste Collection charge which was implemented in April this year.

As residents of Thurrock, we are deeply troubled by the introduction of this garden waste collection charge. For those of us who diligently maintain our lawns and gardens, this additional fee is not just a minor inconvenience but a significant financial burden. In conjunction with an 8% rise in council tax - amounting to approximately £200 per annum for most households  - this new charge feels like an unjust double burden. Many of us residents believe, rightly or wrongly, that our council tax already covers waste disposal services.

This extra financial strain is more than an annoyance; it is a genuine hardship that will affect many households and families within our community. According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), a substantial number of households in Thurrock subsist on below-average incomes. For these families, the new charge could exacerbate financial difficulties. The numerous business closures throughout the borough serve as a stark testament to the escalating costs that residents and local businesses alike are grappling with.

We acknowledge the funding challenges that local councils face. However, we believe there must be more equitable solutions that do not unduly burden residents who are striving to maintain their homes and gardens. It is well-known that previous council administrations mismanaged a considerable amount of council funds, leaving its current and future finances in a precarious state. Despite this, we implore the current Council - now fully under Labour leadership - to empathise with the residents' plight and seek ways to either eliminate or significantly reduce the £80 charge.

A large proportion of our borough's residents are pensioners, senior citizens, and low-income families who are already struggling with high inflation, rising costs of everyday necessities, and exorbitant fuel and energy bills. These residents have come to rely on the Council's garden waste collection services. For many, particularly the elderly, an additional charge is untenable and has caused widespread distress.

The petition, supported by 3,363 residents, calls on the Council Executives to recognise the severe impact of rising costs and the strain they place on the daily lives of Thurrock's citizens. We urge you to find a solution that alleviates this burden, particularly for our elderly and low-income families.

With the borough now under Labour leadership, we are hopeful that this request will be met with understanding and swift action, ensuring that the trust placed in the Labour Party and this Council by the voters in Thurrock, is not misplaced.
