The Issue

Housing is a Right, Not a Privilege!

Hello, I'm starting this petition to encourage our local council Bexley council, along with  councils across the UK to take urgent and meaningful action to provide more ground floor flats and accessible homes for those of us who need them most.

As someone living with accessibility needs and chronic conditions, finding a suitable home has been a constant battle. When you bid on council properties week after week, only to be repeatedly overlooked, your bidding position to get bumped down or to see there’s no appropriate places to bid on or no where in general, it’s more than disappointing, it’s disheartening and exhausting. I’m not asking for luxury, I don’t want a mansion, I’m simply asking for a home that meets my basic needs, gives me the freedom to move safely and to allow me to live independently like I deserve.

It's deeply frustrating to see how rare ground floor or accessible council homes are, and when they are available they’re like gold dust! For many of us this isn't just a preference, it's a necessity to live freely!

Meanwhile, there are over 1.5 million abandoned or empty homes across the UK. These properties sit unused, falling apart or vandalised while people like me are stuck waiting, struggling, and suffering. Imagine the difference it would make if even a fraction of those homes were refurbished and turned into accessible council homes! The solutions are already out there, what’s missing is the urgency to act now!

I’m urging our council to:

 • Build or convert more ground floor and disability-adapted council flats

• Prioritise those with medical or accessibility needs in housing decisions

• Renovate and reclaim empty properties, everyone deserves a safe, secure, and suitable place to live This shouldn’t be a constant uphill fight for those of us with disabilities.

Please please sign and share this petition. Let’s demand that our council stop ignoring those of us who are being left behind and forgotten, and start making housing fair, accessible, and available for all!
