Urge the Colorado State Legislature: Ban Fur Sales Now!

Urge the Colorado State Legislature: Ban Fur Sales Now!
The Issue
I'm calling on the Colorado General Assembly to introduce a bill to ban the sale and manufacture of fur products in Colorado.
Dozens of stores across Colorado sell fur clothing and accessories, with each sale perpetuating an industry built on unimaginable animal cruelty and environmental devastation.
Sixteen U.S. cities have already banned fur sales (including Boulder) and in 2019, California led the way with the first statewide fur ban. Pro-Animal Future has successfully placed a citywide fur sales ban on Denver’s ballot through the citizen petition process. But we don't have to wait for city-by-city change. The Colorado House of Representatives, the Senate, and Governor Polis have the power to enact this vital statewide reform immediately, making Colorado a national leader in ethical fashion.
The reality is that 15-40 foxes, 50-60 minks, or 150-300 chinchillas are killed to make a single fur coat. These sentient beings endure lives of misery in cramped wire cages and are robbed of their natural behaviors, before facing brutal deaths.
But the cruelty doesn't end there. The fur industry is a ticking time bomb for public health. Fur farms are breeding grounds for zoonotic diseases, as we've seen with devastating COVID-19 outbreaks on mink farms. Scientists warn that without immediate action, fur farms could spark the next global pandemic.
The environmental toll is equally alarming. A 2023 report from Humane Society International found that the carbon footprint of mink fur is 25 times higher than faux fur. Fur farms pollute water sources and release harmful greenhouse gases, accelerating climate change at a time when we desperately need to reduce our footprint.
Join me in calling on the Colorado Legislature to take bold, compassionate action:
- Ban the sale and manufacture of new fur products in Colorado.
- Implement legislation making fur farming illegal to prevent any new fur operations from opening in our state.
- Protect countless animals from cruel exploitation.
- Safeguard public health by reducing the risk of zoonotic disease outbreaks.
- Demonstrate environmental leadership by rejecting an industry that significantly contributes to the climate crisis.
TAKE ACTION! Please sign this petition, it shows our representatives that Coloradans reject cruelty and environmental destruction and that we expect better for our state, for animals, and for our planet. Together, we can #MakeFurHistory in Colorado and set an example for the entire nation to follow.
