Urge the Canadian Government to Withdraw Buffy Ste. Marie's Order of Canada

The Issue

As an Indigenous Canadian, I am deeply troubled by the misrepresentation conducted by Ms. Buffy Ste. Marie, who has been portraying herself as a trailblazing Indigenous Canadian since receiving the Order of Canada in 1997. This portrayal is an injustice against countless true Indigenous people tirelessly working for social justice within our nation.

The Constitution of the Order of Canada, paragraph 25(c), provides for termination of a person's appointment to the Order by an ordinance made by the Governor General. We believe that this case warrants such action.

Ms. Ste. Marie's actions have not only misrepresented her own identity but also undermined and overshadowed genuine efforts made by actual Indigenous Canadians fighting for equality and justice every day.

We are not seeking to diminish Ms.Ste.Marie's contributions to music or her activism work; rather, we want recognition where it is truly due - with those who authentically represent and advocate for our communities.

By rescinding Ms.Ste.Marie’s honor, we can begin repairing this misrepresentation and bring attention back to those deserving individuals whose voices have been overshadowed in their fight for social justice within our country.

Please join us in urging the Government of Canada to reconsider its decision and rescind Buffy Ste.Marie’s appointment to The Order Of Canada as per Paragraph 25(c) of its Constitution.
