According to Amnesty International, more than 800 foreign nationals were abducted in conflict zones worldwide in 2023 alone. On the evening of Wednesday February 7th Borak Alagha, 18, and Hashem Alagha, 20, two brothers born in the Chicago area, were taken hostage by Israeli forces along with their father, Ahmed Alagha and uncle Maen Alagha, who suffers from a severe mental disability.

Israeli forces stormed into their shelter while they were sleeping in the neighborhood of al-Mawasi, in west Khan Younis, at 5AM Gaza time. The soldiers tied up and blindfolded the women and children in the family and threw them outside the shelter, the family said. The soldiers then destroyed the shelter, confiscated all electronic devices, and slashed the tires of the family’s cars, depriving them of their only mode of transportation.
