Urge the Australian Government to Legislate Against Shrinkflation

The issue

As part of my end-of-year project, I have come to understand the implications and effects of shrinkflation on consumers like us. Shrinkflation refers to the practice where companies reduce the size of their product without reducing the price – disguising a price increase. By doing this, companies continue to profit while consumers are left deceived and paying more for less. An AC Nielsen report found that nearly 30% of packaged goods in Australia shrinked in size between 2009 and 2013 [1], a clear demonstration of this pressing issue.

We are calling on our Australian Government to legislate a Shrinkflation Prevention Act. Such an Act would require manufacturers and retailers to prominently display any reductions in product size on their packaging, allowing consumers to make a more informed purchase decision. By taking this stand, Australia would join other governments in countries like South Korea, which already have laws combating shrinkflation [2].

We ask you, as responsible consumers, to support this petition. Your signature will be a push for transparency, advocating for our right to receive the value we pay for. Please sign this petition and urge the Australian Government to legislate against shrinkflation.
