Shrinkflation refers to the practice where companies reduce the size of their product without reducing the price – disguising a price increase. By doing this, companies continue to profit while consumers are left deceived and paying more for less. An AC Nielsen report found that nearly 30% of packaged goods in Australia shrinked in size between 2009 and 2013 [1], a clear demonstration of this pressing issue.

We are calling on our Australian Government to legislate a Shrinkflation Prevention Act. Such an Act would require manufacturers and retailers to prominently display any reductions in product size on their packaging, allowing consumers to make a more informed purchase decision. By taking this stand, Australia would join other governments in countries like South Korea, which already have laws combating shrinkflation [2].
