Urge Tendring District Council to grant discretionary tenancy to Vicky's mum

The Issue

I am writing to address a deeply personal issue that has affected those close to me, and I ask for your support. My late friend and next-door neighbour, Vicky, tragically passed away, leaving behind her children, Meila and Miles. In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, her mum, Maxine , is now the primary caregiver for the children. She is a cornerstone of stability in this time of turmoil for Meila and Miles, who are already grappling with the profound grief of losing their mother, while she deals with her own grief and loss of her daughter.

The children are fortunate to have the familiar, loving presence of their grandmother, who moved into Vicky’s council home in Tendring District while Vicky was in hospital, in August 2026. This is not just a building; it is the children's only sense of home, filled with memories and surrounded by a supportive community that stood by Vicky and now stands ready to support her children.

However, there is a pressing issue that threatens to destabilise all they hold dear: the potential loss of their home. Tendring District Council has the power to exercise a discretionary tenancy to allow Maxine to remain in this council home, but this must be actioned.

This home is not just bricks and mortar; it represents continuity and care. A secure home would help Meila and Miles feel safe as they navigate a world without their mother. Relocating them threatens to isolate them from daily support systems, close friendships, and neighbors who provide much-needed care and comfort, including my own daughter, Michela, who shares a special bond with Meila.

Research indicates that maintaining consistency in environment, relationships, and routine can significantly aid a child's recovery process after losing a loved one (source: National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). Both Meila and Miles have faced more emotional upheaval than any child should ever bear. Any further disruption to their lives could jeopardise their emotional and psychological well-being.

Tendring District Council has the discretion to transform these children's lives by allowing Maxine to stay in their home. Understanding the impact and exercising compassion in this decision would uphold the values of community and family that are so vital in times of loss.

By requiring Maxine and the children to leave by 29 January 2027, the council is making them homeless and creating an unnecessary need for temporary accommodation followed by rehousing. This would carry substantial costs for the council, alongside considerable staff time spent arranging accommodation and managing a further housing application. Allowing them to remain would avoid these unnecessary costs, preserve the children’s home and support network, and leave more resources available to help another family who is already homeless. I urge the council to consider the financial implications of displacing this family, as well as the distress it would cause two children who have already lost their mum.

Please join me in urging the Tendring District Council to consider the well-being of these children and grant Maxine a discretionary tenancy. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the rights of Meila and Miles to experience stability, continuity, and unconditional support – essentials for their healing and growth during this difficult time.

Your signature can help preserve their sense of home and community ties as they recover from their heartbreaking loss.
