Urge Sunnyvale to recycle black plastics and clamshells
The Issue
As passionate and determined Girl Scouts working on our Bronze Award project, we aim to create a positive impact on our environment and reduce pollution in our beautiful community of Sunnyvale. Our primary focus is to urge the City of Sunnyvale to implement recycling for black plastics and clamshell containers at the local SMart Station.
Black plastics are commonly used for take-out containers and trays, and clear clamshell containers are used for fruit. Currently, these materials end up in landfills because they are not accepted in Sunnyvale’s recycling program at the SMart station.
Neighboring cities like San Francisco and San Jose do recycle these items, demonstrating that change is possible.
The environmental benefits cannot be overstated. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recycling plastics can cut water usage by up to 50% and reduce air pollution substantially.
We have written a letter to the mayor asking that the city council set an example for other cities to follow, and request that the SMart station recycle black plastics and clamshell containers. But we need your support.
Please sign our petition to show your support for expanding recycling capabilities at the SMart Station. Together, we can create a cleaner future for Sunnyvale.
