The issue

The residents and owners of property in Lake Conjola are fed up with the endless buck-passing involved in getting the lake opened at water levels that are already at required trigger points. As the lake currently sits at a height of 1 metre, many of us feel it is crucial for Shoalhaven City Council to take decisive action to mitigate the risk of flooding that could cause devastating damage to both individuals and property.

Under section 191 of the Local Government Act 1993, Shoalhaven City Council possesses the authority to open Lake Conjola to alleviate the potential disaster. Yet, despite having the power and clear indicators showing the necessity, action has been woefully delayed. Opening the lake is not just a bureaucratic decision; it is a critical step needed to protect the safety and wellbeing of our community.

In past experiences, we have seen how quickly the water levels can rise, turning what is already a concern into a full-scale emergency. Failure to open the lake at these crucial trigger points leaves our community vulnerable to flooding. This situation puts immense stress on emergency services and can lead to the destruction of homes, businesses, and the natural environment that makes our community unique.

Moreover, this issue has been compounded by indecision and a slow-moving response process, leading to frustration and a lack of trust in governance among the Lake Conjola community members. It is essential for our local government to act as stewards of the community, addressing pressing issues with prompt and evidence-based solutions.

We implore Shoalhaven City Council to fulfill their responsibility under the Local Government Act, taking immediate action to open Lake Conjola as a precautionary measure against imminent flooding threats. This is not just an administrative task but a duty to secure the lives and properties around the lake.

We call upon you, our fellow community members and supporters of Lake Conjola, to stand with us and urge the council to take timely and decisive action. By signing this petition, you help us send a powerful message to those in power that doing nothing is not an option when safety and prevention are on the line.

Please sign and share this petition to help protect Lake Conjola and hold those responsible accountable to their duty.
