Urge Sesame Street to Address Antisemitism

The Issue

My family grew up with Sesame Street. I love seeing Julia as I am autistic myself. Sesame Street shows children people like themselves. It promotes peace and civil rights, and Jim Henson created Sesame Street as a peace builder. Recently, a neo-Nazi hacker grossly misused Elmo's Twitter account to spread hateful antisemitic messages, calling for atrocities that are diametrically opposed to the values Sesame Street stands for.

This incident is not just a violation against Sesame Street but against everything it represents—kindness, acceptance, and understanding. For decades, this show has been a beacon of hope and learning for children around the world, teaching them about diversity, inclusion, and peace. Seeing Elmo's image twisted for hate-filled rhetoric was heartbreaking and infuriating.

This is why I am calling on Sesame Workshop to create a special episode about antisemitism featuring Elmo and diverse Jewish characters. They have an unparalleled platform to reach children and families globally and can use this influence to educate and spread understanding about the impacts of antisemitism. Addressing this issue directly will reinforce the show's message of love and acceptance, ensuring that future generations are equipped with the knowledge and compassion to combat hate in all its forms.

Furthermore, I urge that the hacker responsible for this reprehensible act be held accountable, not only through a court-ordered apology but by actively contributing to the community. They should be made to work at a Holocaust museum and with Sesame Workshop to understand how their actions betrayed the very foundation of children's education and awareness.

Jim Henson's vision was to create a world where every child, regardless of race, religion, or ability, is treasured and celebrated. Let's honor that vision by taking a stand against antisemitism, teaching our children empathy and the strength of unity.

Please join me in urging Sesame Street to take this pivotal step towards a more inclusive and understanding society. Sign this petition to make a difference.
