The Issue

In 2019, following concerns raised by estate residents, the Board of Sandycombe Properties agreed to stop the use of glyphosate on flint walls.

Unfortunately, despite Lewes Borough Council’s decision to stop using glyphosate in 2019, and mounting evidence about the dangers, Sandycombe Properties started to use this harmful chemical on the flint walls again in September 2026.

Glyphosate, a herbicide linked to cancer and biodiversity loss, poses significant risks to all living beings that come into contact with it. A report from the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington in March 2026 emphasises the strong evidence linking glyphosate to serious health harms. https://deohs.washington.edu/news/global-scientists-say-regulators-must-address-glyphosates-strong-links-health-harms

Therefore, we are calling upon the Board of Sandycombe Properties to cease use of glyphosate on the flint walls.

We also ask the Board to replace glyphosate with a less harmful alternative on the estate paths and hard standing.
