Urge Sacramento County to Allow Exceptions for Roosters in Fair Oaks Village SPA
The Issue
As the heart and soul behind Odd Bird Rescue, I tirelessly work to provide sanctuary for abandoned domestic roosters in Fair Oaks Village. Recently, our nurturing efforts hit a barrier as we received a county code violation for illegally keeping livestock, specifically crowing fowl (roosters). What strikes us is that while we are penalized, the county fails to enforce its own codes tackling the dumping of these domestic animals.
It's disheartening to see these innocent birds, who are often left in the lurch by their owners, given no place for refuge. The Special Planning Areas (SPA) of Fair Oaks Village currently do not make exceptions for such animals, which leaves us, concerned citizens, in trying circumstances. We are not seeking to violate laws. On the contrary, we aim to save these creatures from a fate they didn't choose.
Every year, countless roosters are dumped in our community. These animals are not wild; they are domestic and need our care. Sacramento County's Animal Care and Regulation Department reported over 100 rooster intake cases in 2020 alone. Yet, the guidelines for rooster management in SPAs have not been revised.
We are on a mission to change this. We request the county of Sacramento to acknowledge the issue at hand and make exceptions in the SPA of Fair Oaks Village for roosters. Let us provide these animals with the safe haven they deserve in their hour of need. Only then can we proudly call ourselves as a society that cares for all its members - humans and animals alike.
Please sign this petition and join us in urging Sacramento County officials to amend their policies for a more compassionate community. Let us speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Sign the petition today.
