In the tranquil town of Richmond, New York, the stories of our veterans echo through the generations. These brave individuals, who have sacrificed their health and well-being for the safety of our nation, deserve our utmost respect and support. Sadly, some of these veterans suffer from service-related disabilities that impair their ability to lead a normal life. In 2025, New York State enacted legislation (RPTL 458-a(11) chapter 672 and later amended in 2026 by chapters 59 and 77) that allows municipalities the option to offer a property tax exemption for veterans who have a permanent and total disability caused by their military service. This exemption could significantly ease the financial burden for those who have given so much. Yet, our hometown of Richmond has yet to adopt this critical provision.
