The Issue

PumpkinFest Toronto at Downsview Park has long been a cherished tradition, bringing families and friends together for a celebration of autumn and community. However, there is a dark side to this otherwise joyful event: the live animal stage show. This aspect of the festival involves live animals being used for entertainment, something that has raised significant ethical and welfare concerns.

It is deeply personal to us as people who cherish and value all living beings to advocate for the compassionate treatment of animals. Data from various animal welfare organizations, including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), reveal that live animal attractions lead to stress and suffering for the animals involved. These creatures are frequently exhibited in unnatural environments, away from their habitats, subjecting them to loud noises, unfamiliar people, and harsh handling.

Moreover, the Toronto Humane Society advises against the use of animals in entertainment, supporting the notion that such practices do not align with humane treatment and respect for animal rights. Studies show that animals used in entertainment endure physical harm and mental distress due to captivity and exhibition in constrained spaces.

There's growing public consensus for more humane festival activities that do not involve animal exploitation. Other successful events in Toronto, like the Toronto Christmas Market, delight and entertain without the use of animal performances.

Our goal with this petition is to urge the organizers of PumpkinFest Toronto to remove the live animal stage show from their event line-up. By doing so, PumpkinFest can continue to be a fun-filled, family-friendly event without causing harm to any animals.

Instead, festival organizers can introduce alternative attractions, such as more interactive activities for children, craft workshops, or even virtual wildlife education showcases. These changes would not only appeal to a larger audience but also reflect a commitment to ethical entertainment standards.

If you agree that we can celebrate the harvest season without compromising on our values of kindness and compassion, please sign this petition. Together, we can help transform PumpkinFest Toronto into a model of humane celebration.

We want to sincerely thank and commend the organizers for confirming that there will be no petting zoos or pony rides this year. This is a huge improvement and a wonderful step forward.
