According to UNICEF, over 18,000 children have been killed in Gaza since October 2023—an average of 28 every single day. Many others face a different, slower fate: death from hunger. The World Health Organization has called this a “man-made mass starvation.” At least 222 people, including more than 100 children, have already died from malnutrition.

Pope Leo has spoken out before, calling the suffering in Gaza “increasingly worrying and painful” and urging for humanitarian aid to be allowed in. But now, the time for words may have passed. A personal visit could shine a global spotlight on the urgency of opening the humanitarian gates. As Madonna reminded him, “You are the only one of us who cannot be denied entry.”
