The incomplete Earthseed trilogy, meant to address environmental catastrophes, social divisions, and extreme wealth inequality, continues to resonate with growing urgency as these challenges intensify each year. The first two books of the series have already engaged with these issues in ways that demonstrate Butler’s visionary insight into the future.

It is vital that the final chapter of the Earthseed series be brought to life. NK Jemisin would be a great candidate for this task, given her proven track record of taking Butler’s torch and pushing the genre further, though I have full faith that the estate would have no shortage of capable and worthy candidates to carefully consider for this important project. The Earthseed story is too important to leave unfinished, and we must find a writer who can honor Butler’s vision while carrying the story forward into our contemporary reality.

The completion of the third book, Parable of the Trickster, would not only honor Butler’s contribution to literature but also provide an invaluable gift to her fans. We urge the estate of Octavia Butler to release the necessary rights, allowing the final chapter of Earthseed to be written, and ensuring that Butler’s groundbreaking work continues to inspire and challenge future generations.
