Urge Oceanside City Council to Block Bus Egress from Missouri Ave at OTC
The Issue
My home is located in the neighborhood next to the Oceanside Transit Center (OTC), along with dozens of my neighbors. We live in what is now a sleepy neighborhood, renowned for its light bike and pedestrian traffic. The current proposed design to re-route bus traffic onto Missouri Avenue threatens to irrevocably change the unique character of our community, making it less safe for residents and visitors alike.
The proposed NCTD design by the project developer, Toll Brothers, will re-direct bus egress away from Seagaze Drive onto the narrow Missouri Avenue, significantly increasing traffic congestion in our neighborhood at the south end of the OTC. This change will lead to greater noise levels, increased exhaust emissions, and a higher risk for pedestrians and cyclists, altering the peaceful nature of our neighborhood. The potential hazards of increased traffic on this narrow road are real and concerning. Most important, Missouri was never designed for bus traffic. It was designed only for auto, bike and pedestrian access between Coast Highway and our homes.
We understand the need for a transit center; however, it should not come at the expense of our community’s safety and harmony. Directing buses to Seagate Drive instead would ensure that our neighborhood maintains its existing tranquility, while still supporting the growth that comes with improved public transport.
We urge the Oceanside City Council to vote against the proposed design and work towards a solution that respects the needs and safety of the current residents. By advocating for a redesign, we can ensure the development preserves the essence of our community essence and culture.
Hundreds of families, including seniors and children, use these streets daily. Protecting their safety and maintaining the neighborhood’s culture should remain a priority. Let's come together to seek a more thoughtful solution and ensure that development in Oceanside reflects the needs of its residents.
Please sign this petition to demand that Oceanside City Council votes 'No' to the current proposal and insists on a redesign that re-routes bus traffic back to Seagaze Drive. Together, we can create a positive change for Oceanside, safeguarding the character and safety of our cherished community.
