Urge Newark Valley Township to Resume Maintenance of Chamberlain Rd.

Urge Newark Valley Township to Resume Maintenance of Chamberlain Rd.
The Issue
Over the past 30 years, residents of 1079 Chamberlain Rd, Newark Valley, New York, have relied on the local township authorities to maintain the road leading up to their property line. However, for the past four years, the township highway department has discontinued this essential service, building up the road yearly, causing an alarming public safety hazard. A trench now cuts across the road, from the neighbors abandoned driveway. reaching up to 6 inches in depth, and 10 inches wide. Which presents a severe hazard to anyone travelling on the road. This is the result of the 1st rain after the highway dept. tar and chipped the road.
The refusal to resume the necessary road maintenance has resulted in multiple issues and incidents, with the trench worsening during colder months due to water, ice and snow build-up. This situation has caused disruption to the resident's driveway, causing damage and leading to a number of near-accidents. There has been an accident reported in this past due to vehicle sliding off the road into a 2' ditch due to ice build up.Town hgwy dept superintendent and town supervisor states its tax payers responsibility to work past their property lines and repair and maintain the town road. The repair goes from said property line to 18' min. point > max point of 26' in 2023, Now for asking them to do their job that was done for decades. They retaliated and moved the road to a max point of 50" in 2024 and now it is also damaging the downhill neighbor's driveway. They also stopped mowing around our mailbox like the rest of the neighbors for the postman and us. I contacted the highway dept. many times. Upon 2 meetings, the supervisor told me to move my mailbox, fix my driveway, the road leading to my driveway is an easement and we only do work from the center of the road to 25'.Which leads right to my property line. 3rd meeting at location with hgwy superintendent Joe Tennant and town supervisor Stuart Yetter. The hgwy superintendent stated he did not say to move my mailbox etc... and now its " We only do work 12' 14' sometimes 16" from the center of the road. I called him a liar then they both decided to double talk to my mother and I. We asked "Who can we talk to about this beside the two of you". they said "No one" . We have to take it to the town board. We asked "Who is on the board"? They state "We are". Upon going to the board meeting where the supervisor told me verbally on the phone, the time, place and date to speak. His opening statement was. " We listen to what you have to say and we will do what we want". He made me wait for 2 hours then said " We have no time for you". A board member said " I would like to hear what he has to say" The supervisor said. " It doesn't matter he lives in no man's land". Had another meeting with Warren Smith a board member at location and he proceeded to get right in my face yelling and screaming like he was going to attack me.. I told him some choice words and to leave. Weeks later after the town board meeting and before the next board meeting. I received a letter from a lawyer stating that I asked the town to work on my personal driveway. The town used tax payers money to pay a lawyer to lie for them. I still have a copy of the document I wrote for the town board meeting and left a copy and pictures with the town board These are your tyrants and bullies on the board. They are civil servants who work for the town.
These dangerous circumstances call for the immediate attention of the Newark Valley Town Highway Department, who, until four years ago, had always undertaken the road's upkeep. It is not only incongruous but preposterous for the town to state that the resident is now responsible for the upkeep of a road used by the wider public.
Residents of 1079 Chamberlain Rd are not asking for special treatment, but rather for the continuation of a service that has been standard procedure for decades. For the safety of all who use this road, and in the interest of public welfare, we call on the Newark Valley Township to resume the maintenance of Chamberlain Rd up to and including the property line of 1079 Chamberlain Rd, Newark Valley, New York.
