Urge New Jersey lawmakers to advance veteran property tax relief bills
The Issue
When I served my country, I didn’t imagine that returning home with a permanent service-connected disability would bring countless struggles beyond personal health—particularly financial ones. Yet, this is the reality for thousands of veterans like me across New Jersey. Under current state law, only those veterans rated at 100% disability receive full property tax exemptions. This leaves a significant financial burden on countless veterans with less than total disability ratings, who still experience substantial impacts on their lives and careers.
The proposed bills, A1118/S1212 and A1488/S153, offer a more equitable solution. A1118/S1212 aims to provide property tax exemptions proportionate to a veteran's VA-determined disability percentage. This includes mental health disabilities like PTSD and ensures protection extends to surviving partners. Meanwhile, A1488/S153 seeks to extend these essential benefits to those who qualify completely, addressing the issue of veterans being left in financial limbo due to discrepancies between disability reporting and property tax applications.
In New Jersey, the message should be clear: no veteran should be left behind. The struggle doesn’t stop with deployment—it continues when returning home. These bills reflect an acknowledgment of our sacrifices and offer overdue relief to the financial burdens imposed on disabled veterans and their families.
It's not just about numbers on a page. It's about recognizing the dignity and respect earned by these men and women. It's about understanding that while no amount of money can truly repay their sacrifices, taking actionable legislative steps can ease the financial hardships faced by our heroes.
Now is the time for New Jersey lawmakers to act with empathy and urgency. By scheduling hearings and bringing A1118/S1212 and A1488/S153 to a vote, we have a chance to correct these oversights and provide deserving veterans the relief they have earned and rightfully deserve.
Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to prioritize these imperative bills and support our disabled veterans and their families in New Jersey.
