Urge Middlesex County Fair Association to End Animal Entertainment and Exhibits
The Issue
As a resident of New Jersey, I am proud of our state's progressive approach to animal rights- being one of the first states to ban several species from being used in traveling circuses. Yet, I am deeply saddened that this ethos is not reflected in the decisions taken by the Middlesex County Fair Association. Their continued use of animals, including pig races, as a source of entertainment is against the spirit of this law.
Pigs are amongst the most intelligent species of animals, on par with other large mammals like dolphins and elephants ("Animal Cognition", Spring 2022). To use such cognitively advanced beings for mere amusement is not only an exploitative practice, but also an ethically indefensible one.
Moreover, studies have shown that such forms of entertainment can contribute to stress and physiological issues in animals ("Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science", 2019). It is important to understand that fairgrounds are not the natural habitats for these animals and the way they are treated often neglects their psychological, as well as physical needs.
In view of these compelling reasons, we ask the Middlesex County Fair Association to stop featuring animal-centric entertainment and exhibits, and instead, devise ways of engaging the public that do not compromise the wellbeing of our fellow creatures.
Please sign this petition and help us take a stand against such unjust practices in our community.
