Governor Whitmer was recently elected after saying she would decommission the Enbridge Line 5 oil pipeline that carries 23 million gallons of Canadian oil every day through the open waters of the Great Lakes. In a surprise to many, she changed course and is right now negotiating with Enbridge to move the pipeline into a proposed tunnel through the Great Lakes.

Because of Michigan's legal jurisdiction over the four-mile section of pipeline in the Great Lakes, Governor Whitmer is uniquely positioned to be the first person ever to shut down an operating oil pipeline. This is the action we need, not building an oil tunnel for Line 5 that will accelerate our climate disaster. 

A tunnel would allow this oil pipeline to operate for another 50 to 100 years, at the very time when the world's scientists have reported that we must slash carbon emissions by half within 11 years. It would assuredly mean Enbridge would replace and expand the entire Line 5 pipeline through Michigan to carry Canada's chief export: tar sands, the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel known to humans.

When the oil in Line 5 makes its way to a refinery and then is burned, it spills the carbon equivalent of 21 coal-fired power plants into the atmosphere every year, making it a significant contributor to our climate crisis. 

This oil tunnel is the opposite of what Governor Whitmer promised on Earth Day when she said, "We are going to do everything we can to mitigate human impacts that are warming the globe and changing our climate forever."

Dear Governor Whitmer,

An oil tunnel is a bad deal for Michigan and a terrible deal for the climate. When burned, the oil Line 5 carries releases the carbon pollution equal to 21 coal plants. If allowed to build a tunnel, Enbridge will replace and expand the entire length of Line 5 to carry the most carbon-intensive fuel known to humans: tar sands.

Please put our children’s future first and follow through on your promise to lead on climate. Take action now to decommission Line 5, and do not make an oil tunnel deal with Enbridge.
