Urge Lakeway City Council to Reject Cell Tower Permit Near Serene Hills Elementary

The Issue

As a parent and a resident of Lakeway, TX, I am deeply concerned about the proposal by KGI Wireless to erect a cell tower next to Serene Hills Elementary School and across from The Hills Park at 3303 Serene Hills Drive. This cell tower would emit harmful RF radiation to over 700 innocent children studying at the elementary school, along with thousands of homeowners living in the vicinity.

Scientific investigations suggest that RF radiation from cell towers can have daunting health implications. It has been associated with varied health issues ranging from developmental delays to learning and memory problems, and even cancer. Scientists and health experts worldwide advise cell towers to be installed at a safe distance of minimum 500 meters (1640 feet) from populated areas to constrain the health effects of RF radiation.  The proposed tower is much closer to the school and The Hills Park than this recommended safe distance.

Approval of this special use permit would not just risk the health of our developing children but would expose the city of Lakeway to potential liabilities arising from health issues linked to cell tower radiation.

In addition to the health concerns, local residents have also voiced concerns over the 200+ foot tower that will be looming over their homes and a permanent eyesore in the Lakeway skyline, effectively lowering property values.

The construction of a cell tower can have adverse effects on the local environment, including the destruction of green spaces, disruption of wildlife habitats, and the potential for harmful chemicals to seep into the soil and water supply. Preserving our natural surroundings is essential for the well-being of our community and future generations.

Another huge concern with this location is it violates Lakeway City Code Section 30.05.003 "A proposed special use permit must comply with the following 1) the issuance of the proposed permit will not have an adverse effect on the value of surrounding properties nor impeded their proper development."  According to the National Association of Realtors website, studies have shown that property values will decrease within half a mile of a cell tower and if the tower is visible from the property this decrease is even larger.  This could cost affected residents tens of millions of dollars.

It should be noted that even a member of ZAPCO has publicly declared his disagreement with this proposed location based on the following factors:  the city has not completed due diligence on alternate proposals or land uses, lack of data on the actual problem, lack of data on whether this would actually solve the "problem", and the health concerns caused by proximity to the school.

We are, therefore, appealing to the Lakeway City Council to consider the severity of the potential risks and vote against the special use permit for KGI Wireless. Until there is definitive proof of safety, we should adopt the precautionary principle and avoid unnecessary exposure to this risk. It is time we prioritize the health of our children, safety of  fellow residents, and sustained values of our property investments above all. We urge concerned citizens, parents, and homeowners to raise their voice against this proposal. Sign the petition and protect our kids, our families, and our community.
