Urge Kirklees Council to develop former Gas Works site for Huddersfield Giants

Urge Kirklees Council to develop former Gas Works site for Huddersfield Giants
The Issue
As a passionate Huddersfield resident and a dedicated supporter of our town's rugby team, I feel it is absolutely imperative for the future of Huddersfield Giants that they are granted the opportunity to build a new stadium that meets their current needs. The growth of the club is more than just a sporting concern; it represents the spirit and pride of Huddersfield itself. Such a development is vital not only for the team but also for the community.
The vacant gasworks site is an approximate 7.5-acre land area that has been idle for years in the heart of Huddersfield—both an eyesore and a wasted opportunity in a town renowned for its rich rugby history. This location, adorned with history as the birthplace of Rugby League, is crying out for rejuvenation and utility. In seeing the emergence of modern architecture around it, it's imperative we transform this static land into a vibrant hub of local activity.
A new stadium wouldn’t just be a win for sports fans—it's a direct opportunity for local job creation, economic stimulation, and enhanced community facilities that serve everyone, including local youth sports programs, cultural festivals, and gatherings that can foster community spirit and inclusivity. Engaging with Ken Davy to lead this transformative project means partnering with someone who has already shown commendable commitment and vision for our town's sports legacy.
Allowing this development will also open the opportunity to create even more development at the nearby John Smiths stadium which, again will create more jobs and economic growth making the whole area a hub of sport, retail and leisure for the people of Huddersfield and beyond.
We urge Kirklees Council to collaborate with Ken Davy to redevelop the gasworks site, breathing life back into it for the sake of our community and our proud sporting traditions. Let the legacy of Huddersfield as the birthplace of Rugby League be celebrated and built upon—a testament to the past and a foundation for future generations.
Sign this petition to get from Kirklees Council to work with Mr Davy to find a solution to the vacant gasworks site for development into a new stadium incorporating highlt paid jobs and health innovatives that will serve as a cornerstone for community and sports in Huddersfield.
