Urge Kilkenny County Council to Restore and Resurrect the Suspension Bridge

The Issue

I speak as one among many in Kilkenny City who long for easier access across the river. We have gotten used to the long detour to Greensbridge, but it's clear the need for a more convenient northern crossing remains. We believe the solution lies in our past - the Suspension Bridge at Bishop's Meadows that was tragically lost in the great flood of 1947, nearly 80 years ago.

Not only did the bridge of yesteryears serve a practical purpose, it was a symbol of our shared heritage and community. What's more, its absence has turned into a threat as its wreckage in the river Nore has already claimed a life and made the waters unsafe for canoeists and watersports enthusiasts.

We call on Kilkenny County Council to recover and reconstruct the Suspension Bridge, restoring it to its former glory. The project will require effort and resources, but the benefits are undeniable. The bridge will once again connect the residents to the eastern environs of Kilkenny, opening easier access for everyone to the New Dog Park at Dunmore Village.

With the 80th anniversary of its destruction rapidly approaching, what better time to express our resilience and respect to our history than to rebuild the great Suspension Bridge? This may be a personal request, but it is one that reflects the wishes and needs of many in our community.

We strongly urge the Kilkenny County Council to make the right decision for our city. Honor the past, protect the present, and invest in our future. Sign this petition to support the restoration and resurrection of the Suspension Bridge.
