- Share this petition with Katy ISD friends to help us gather more petitions. It's unlikely to change the board majority's mind, but a petition with lots of signatures can send a message that voters are paying attention.
- Mark your calendar, now, for May 3 to vote in the Katy ISD school board election. (early voting will start the week before). Vote for pro-public education candidates who will return the focus of our District away from political games, and back to our students, teachers and families.
Timeline of events leading up to the proposed changes to the Naming Facilities Policy & why this is political.
- December 2024- Discussion and disagreement among board members over the Naming Committee process which resulted in 2 trustees (Cuzela and Calhoun) voting against the Naming Committee's recommendation for Elementary #48 (James and Mitzi Cross Elementary). Victor Perez told the policy committee (himself, Cuzela and Calhoun) to revise the CW Local Naming Facilities policy and bring it back to the board for consideration.
- January 2025- James Cross filed to run for Katy ISD school board of trustees position 1 (which means he is running against incumbent, and current board president, Victor Perez)
- February 2025- The Policy Committee presented their proposed changes on Monday, February 17. The document was uploaded to BoardDocs by Tuesday morning, but the public had no opportunity to review it prior to the meeting. A copy of the redlined policy, including the proposed changes discussed on Monday, is available for viewing here.
Summary of Concerning Changes (as of Monday, 2/18- and as I understand them)
- In order to be considered as a namesake, a person would need to be retired from working for the District for 5 years- as would any family members who share their family name. Trustee Rebecca Fox shared on Monday that this requirement would have disqualified 21 of our current namesakes, had it been in place during the time their names were being considered.
- If a person being considered for a Naming- or one of their family members who shares the family name- decides to run for the Katy ISD school board in the same year they are being considered for having a school or facility named after them, they would be disqualified from naming consideration. (so they could run for board, but they would lose the honor of being considered for naming).
- The policy increases the number of parents required to participate in the Naming Committee from 2 to 6 and requires a quorum of at least 4 parents to be present. If the Naming Committee fails to meet the quorum requirement twice, the Naming Process is then transferred to the School Board, and the public's only opportunity for input is the public forum.
The CW Local Naming Facilities policy is the latest action taken by Victor Perez's pro-voucher PAC backed majority to manipulate our District for personal, political gain. Come hang out with me in the Stand Up for Katy ISD Facebook page to hear more about what goes on at school board meetings- and why paying attention, staying engaged, and voting matters.
