The Issue

Michigan City, Indiana, is plagued by police and public officials who are using illegal drugs, and it's destroying our town. As concerned citizens, we have been watching as our beloved community unravels due to the unscrupulous actions of those meant to protect and serve us. The situation reached a breaking point with the mayor's recent drug test, which raises serious questions about the integrity and capability of our leadership.

In June 2026, several City employees expressed concern regarding a recent mandatory drug test given to all City and County employees. These whistleblowers claim Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch's first drug test was positive for cocaine; employees allege she requested a second test to hide the results of the first one. According to these employees, the second test contained urine not at the required temperature, meaning there is a concern the mayor submitted someone else's urine to the lab for the second test.

Additional allegations include District Attorney Sean Fagan also refused to submit to drug testing for himself and his entire staff at the LaPorte County Prosecutor's Office, and that Long Beach Chief of Police Mark Swistek was reportedly exempt from the drug testing process, per the mayor's instruction.

After confirming the tests were shipped to a lab in Nashville, Tennessee, for processing, the community requested immediate intervention by those above Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch, to determine if the employee's concerns are valid.

Drug abuse among public officials is not just a personal issue but a community crisis that affects us all. When those in power engage in such behavior, it sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the trust and safety of our townspeople. We need our leaders to be role models, demonstrating the pristine conduct we expect.

It's time for Attorney General Todd Rokita, Governor Mike Braun, and the Michigan City Common Council to step in and ensure thorough investigations and transparency regarding the matter. We demand accountability and assurance that our elected officials are indeed exemplars of the law, acting in the best interest of the public they serve.

Statistical evidence has shown that drug use among officials correlates with increased crime rates and misallocation of resources, further jeopardizing community welfare. We refuse to let our town become another statistic. Michigan City deserves better, and it's imperative that immediate measures are undertaken to rectify the situation.

Join us in calling for urgent intervention and demanding justice in the mayor's recent drug test matter. We need credible, strong leadership to guide and heal our community. Your signature can make a difference in reclaiming the integrity of our beloved town. Please sign this petition and share it widely. Together, we can restore trust and confidence in our leaders.
