The Issue

Every day, I devote my time and energy to the stray animals in my community. I feed them, rescue them when they're injured, and arrange for their sterilization at private hospitals. These animals, in return, provide protection and companionship. They are an integral part of our neighborhoods, silently protecting us and maintaining ecological balance.

Recent orders from the Honorable Supreme Court of India seem to suggest that confining or culling stray dogs and cattle is a viable solution to manage their population. However, this approach is both inhumane and ineffective. Just removing or culling these animals will not solve the root of the problem. In fact, it leaves a vacuum for new animals to enter these territories, potentially increasing the risk of diseases such as rabies or even cholera. Moreover, it disrupts the balance, leading to an explosion in population as unchecked dogs continue to reproduce.

The only sustainable and humane solution is to establish proper Animal Birth Control (ABC) centers across the country. If each state sets up at least 10 well-equipped and hygienic ABC centers, which are sterilized and free from corruption, we can effectively control the stray animal population. Government funding for these centers could be sourced from public contributions, ensuring that they are adequately resourced.

These centers should be designed to efficiently carry out sterilization of stray dogs and cattle, after which the animals can be returned to their territories. This approach not only reduces overpopulation and potential bites but also allows these animals to continue contributing to their ecosystems without disruption.

By investing in ABC centers, we can protect our communities and ensure the wellbeing of the animals that live alongside us. This is not just about controlling populations; it's about respecting and valuating the role these animals play in our daily lives.

I urge the Supreme Court and the Government of India to reconsider their stance and to focus on sustainable, humane methods of population control. Join me in petitioning for the establishment of Animal Birth Control centers across the country.
