Urge Hoyoverse to reconsider investing in generative AI
The Issue
Recently, Hoyoverse, developers of hit games such as Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero, have announced they'll invest $14.6 billion into generative AI infrastructures. There have been some recent signs with a Pom-Pom AI chatbot in Star Rail, and several Gen AI integrations in their upcoming Animal Crossing-like game Petit Planet. They also plan to use AI integration in their art workflows, which is concerning given the recent scandal with GenAI assets in rival game Neverness to Everness by Hotta Studio, which Hotta has since walked the decision back and is replacing their Generative AI assets with human made artwork. The decision feels like a slap in the face to the artists, musicians, writers, voice actors, and programmers who worked on the games; as well as the very fans themselves who have contributed so many creative works in the games' fandoms.
One of the largest concerns about generative AI in creative spaces is the fact that it is often trained on existing data, often from other people without their consent. Even if it is allegedly in house and on their own assets and talent, the concern at hand there is that it could reduce or even replace the work the hard working human creatives have on their projects. There is also the concern of its astronomical electricity and water usage; datacenters have been known to ramp up monthly electrical bill costs in adjacent neighborhoods, and pollute water.
Furthermore, there's the issue of data privacy and security. Generative AI requires vast amounts of data, which could potentially be misused or inadequately protected, posing risks to users' personal information.
We urge Hoyoverse to reconsider their investment in Generative AI and instead prioritize sustainable and responsible technological advancements. By focusing on enhancing the capabilities of their talented teams and respecting the authenticity of human-driven creativity, Hoyoverse can continue to lead the industry with integrity and innovation and avoid alienating their devoted fans.
