The difference between the views of people you talk to in the street, in shops, etc continues to be strikingly different to the propaganda which streams from the two councils and the Town Deal Board.
Conversations with people who live around the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, and who are already unhappy with the impact of the new building on the corner of Carter St and Marcus St permitted by ERYC which has created a new blind corner which it is impossible for large vehicles to negotiate, is about a multiple vehicle taxi service which they say is operating from the church set up in in the former Victoria Working Men’s Club. This in an area with a now very dense concentration of HMOs East Riding Council have over-ridden the citizens of this town by granting planning consent.
Add in the state of pavements, poorly maintained and suffering from vehicles being parked on them even before KCOM trashed many of the town’s pavements and you understand why the dissatisfaction expressed by local residents doesn’t match the spin coming from councils and TDB.
One piece of good news, if it happens, is that Network Rail are apparently going to put better pumps in at least the station side of the subway which will hopefully reduce or eliminate the periods when the subway(s) is (are) flooded. Further pictures of plans for the area between the station and the subway under Town Deal plans look attractive, open the subway out more, and do not feature a ludicrous “water feature” to add to the flooding problems. Whether they ever happen, or are simply promises to win votes at the next General Election, and also channel more public money into private hands as well, is another big question facing locals.
