The Issue

As dedicated lactation consultants, Stephanie Trost of Mindful Motherhood Lactation and Rachel Curtis at The Golden Hour witness firsthand the significant impact that lack of insurance coverage has on new families seeking crucial lactation support. Each week, we encounter numerous parents who have to decline essential care because their insurance provider, Highmark, does not include lactation consultants in their network. This omission not only places a financial burden on families but also deprives them of critical healthcare support in a fragile time of newfound parenthood.

Lactation support is a fundamental component of postpartum care. Research clearly shows that breastfeeding has immense health benefits for both mothers and infants. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breastfeeding can reduce the risk of certain infections in infants and can protect mothers against breast and ovarian cancers. Moreover, the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends exclusive breastfeeding for about the first six months of life and continuation along with appropriate complementary foods for at least one year.

Despite these established benefits, many families are left without appropriate support due to insurance limitations. By including lactation consultants as providers in its network, Highmark will empower parents with the guidance they need to successfully begin and maintain breastfeeding, promoting healthier outcomes for families in our communities. This change aligns with federal law; the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates coverage for lactation support and counseling, yet implementation falls short without proper network inclusion.

We call upon Highmark to review and revise its current policies to include lactation consultants within its provider network. This step will ensure all families have access to the care they need, reducing disparities in maternal and infant health care and fostering a healthier generation.

Join us in urging Highmark to take this crucial step towards supporting new mothers and infants. Your signature could be the catalyst needed for this important change. Please sign this petition to hold Highmark accountable for providing comprehensive, inclusive, and equitable healthcare coverage for all families. Together, we can make a significant difference.
