The issue

As a resident of the vibrant Balgowlah and Manly Vale communities, I’m deeply concerned about the potential impact of a McDonald's at 37 Roseberry Street. This picturesque area, known for its community spirit and residential charm, is already grappling with significant traffic congestion. Introducing a McDonald’s outlet at this site would worsen our traffic woes and alter the local character we cherish.

Harrington Property Group, represented by directors and co founders Trevor Byles and Matt Davison, currently owns the site in question. We urge them to heed the voices of not just the local residents but also our local council, state MP, and police force, all of whom share our concerns about the suitability of a McDonald's in this locale. The legal framework might permit such a development, but community welfare, safety, and harmony should take precedence over any potential profit from leasing or selling to a fast-food giant.

The junction around 37 Roseberry Street already struggles with heavy traffic flow, and the addition of a McDonald's would exacerbate the situation. Increased vehicle movement would not only heighten safety risks, especially for our children and elderly residents, but it would also add pressure to our local infrastructure, diminishing the quality of life for everyone.

Beyond the logistical hurdles, a McDonald’s doesn’t align with our community’s values. Our area promotes healthy, sustainable living, with local businesses reflecting these ideals. Allowing McDonald's to set up shop in the heart of Balgowlah could draw away support from local entrepreneurs dedicated to preserving the unique essence of our neighbourhood.

We’re asking Trevor Byles and Matt Davison to explore alternative tenants for 37 Roseberry Street, ones that would enhance rather than disrupt our community fabric. The preferences of residents should be pivotal in deciding the future of this site. Numerous other businesses—be they cultural, artisanal, or community-focused—could bring value without the downsides associated with a large fast-food chain.

Join us in making our voices heard. By signing this petition, you're supporting a collective effort to keep our community thriving, safe, and true to the values we hold dear. Let's ensure that 37 Roseberry Street develops in a way that honors the spirit of Balgowlah and Manly Vale. Sign the petition today and stand with us to protect our neighbourhood from unsuitable development.
