The Crowley Ironworks – a Greenwich experiment in 18th-century business management
The next Greenwich Industrial History talk is on Tuesday 14 October, online, starting at 19:15 for 19:30 UK time.
Our speaker is Jacky Robinson, who spoke to us about the Royal Hospital for Seamen in Greenwich back in January 2022. This time Jacky will be talking on Zoom about the Crowley iron business on the riverbank in Greenwich.
Sir Ambrose Crowley moved his family and his headquarters to Greenwich in 1704 and it was from here that he and his descendants controlled what has been described as the biggest iron business in Europe.
Originally artisans in the Midlands, the family eventually moved to join the ranks of the landed aristocracy, partly by being ‘Owenite, a century before Robert Owen’.
Jacky volunteers as a guide at the Old Royal Naval College. She has been researching the records of the Royal Hospital as well as the story of the Crowleys.
