GREENWICH INDUSTRIAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Our petition urging Greenwich Council to restore the Borough Archive and Museum continues to attract support.  We would urge people to continue to express concern about the current arrangements and - please  - ask others to sign the petition and express their concern.

LEST WE FORGET… THE HISTORY OF THE GREENWICH BOROUGH ARCHIVES.

We understand Greenwich Historical Society have organised a public meeting on the issue on 22nd November 2023. This is at The Trafalgar Tavern, Park Row, Greenwich, SE10 . Doors open 7pm, for a meeting at 7.30. There will be a talk on the history of the Greenwich Archives by Julian Watson, who was Greenwich Local History Librarian for most of the years the library was at Woodlands. The talk will be followed by a general discussion, during which contributions from the floor will be welcomed.

-----------------------------------------

Greenwich Industrial History Society reminds everyone that we once had an accessible local history library and archive, which was open to all without an appointment and which provided both advice and a library to browse for free.   We also had a museum which illustrated and described the lives of all sorts of local residents. It was a cost effective service with staff involved in their communities and working with local people - cheaper, and more knowledgeable, than consultants!

We accept that over the past 20 years changes in the service have been made by the Council in good faith and that many people in the Council, and in the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust, have done their best, but we now have a situation which is far from acceptable.

We need the support of local people, and all our friends in the wider world, to express their concern and show that this is a plea from the many, not the few, for a service which is fit to face and ameliorate the challenges which confront us.  Please get your friends to add their names

Dr.Mary Mills.  Chair.
